Sorority Stereotypes and Usually-Held Opinions

The biggest sororities have hundreds of chapters beyond the U.S. and away—the oldest have been effectually since the 1850s. In that location is a wide variety, culturally, from 1 sorority to another. Some are more popular in the northeast and others in the southern states; some sororities focus more than on philanthropy or academics and others on social activities.

It's hard to generalize about a sorority's reputation nationwide; there are many differences from campus to campus. While some accept strong national cultures across all chapters, there are leap to be differences from one university or higher to another.

Subsequently being exposed to many sororities in my sophomore year in college, I arrived at these decisions and learned a bit through "osmosis."

The following are among the largest national sororities that are members of the National Panhellenic Conference, an umbrella organization comprising 26 member groups. These normally-held opinions give an idea of each sorority's culture, values, and image.

The tier has everything to do with how picky it tin exist virtually members. A "top" tier sorority can basically option just who they want amongst pledges, while a "low" tier sorority takes the leftovers.

Chi Omega

"Chi O's," every bit members are sometimes called, like cultivating a "good girl" image. The national arrangement stresses "Christian ethics." Capacity are generally considered to exist well-organized.

Among the negative sentiments about Chi Omega members is that they tin be a bit isolated (maybe even exclusionary) and limit themselves to their own philanthropic and social activities over cooperation with other Greek-letter organizations. Many take noted that while Chi O'south are sweet and classy, they are non necessarily known as the almost physically attractive women (only not the ugliest, either; many accept said they are "manifestly Janes").

Some say the sorority is full of girls who were rejected at summit-tier sororities but are nevertheless solidly mid-tier. The sorority touts its diversity, but some say the standards are so loose that there'south very little tying all Chi-O's together in terms of personality, looks, campus action, or academic performance.

The consensus, if in that location is i, is that Chi Omega is respected just not necessarily exalted among sororities.

Delta Zeta

Delta Zeta (DZ) girls are generally considered approachable and easy to talk to. This clarification may be related to two stereotypes well-nigh them:

  • They're not generally the most beautiful women on campus
  • They're "piece of cake"

Unfortunately, this reputation has led nigh other sororities on some campuses to consider them lower-tier. They have a reputation for accepting those who were rejected by top-tier sororities and that they are a fill-in pick for many.

Still, DZ women are too known for their strong sisterhood and mutual support. Fraternity members consider DZ girls a lot of fun. DZ members take pride in their deep involvement in campus Greek life. Because of this, only the nastiest sorority girls will outwardly dislike a DZ daughter. Call up of them equally the Betty Suarez, or even the Amanda Tanen, of sororities (for yous Ugly Betty fans).

Some sororities are known for being very involved in campus life, which could be a good fit for a girl who enjoys group and club activities.

Some sororities are known for being very involved in campus life, which could be a proficient fit for a daughter who enjoys group and lodge activities.

Alpha Phi

Blastoff Phi girls are more often than not idea of every bit partiers who like to drink and accept a expert fourth dimension. Their bookish reputation is adept, but they also have a reputation for avoiding tough majors in favor of less-enervating subjects that don't conflict with their social lives. "Classy" and "involved" are not words typically used to describe Alpha Phi girls, just "fun" and "pop" are.

Alpha Phi is considered by many to be an upper mid-tier sorority. Because Alpha Phi girls are perceived to be confident, yous volition observe some quirky and offbeat members among them and plenty who don't intendance what other sororities remember. They are considered laid-back and probably the to the lowest degree likely among major sororities to worry about their reputation.

Some sororities have close ties to fraternities on the same campus and get together informally and for major events.

Some sororities have shut ties to fraternities on the aforementioned campus and get together informally and for major events.

Delta Gamma

Delta Gamma (DGs) is considered a mid-tier sorority almost everywhere across the country. The reputation of DG is that they are classy, supportive of each other, focused on "girl-power," and heavily involved in campus activities. DGs tend to enjoy a level of respect amid other sororities and fraternities.

The words you'll often hear nigh DGs are "nice," "social butterflies," and "skillful girls." Their "proficient girl" reputation means they typically don't tolerate mean girl cattiness. Girls who pledge with DG are ordinarily very happy when accepted into the fold.

Most sororities include philanthropic activities, which can range from working with local non-profits to fundraising or helping maintain the sorority house and grounds.

Delta Delta Delta

Delta Delta Delta ("Tri-Delts") has a national reputation that was lampooned in a 1980s episode of Sat Night Live ("Delta Delta Delta, tin can I helpya helpya helpya?"). Some consider them the quintessential sorority, in both a practiced and a bad fashion. Depending upon the campus, Tri-Delts are either regarded as lower-stop top-tier, or higher-cease mid-tier. The fact that many Tri-Delts consider themselves height-tier might explain some of the resentment they get from other sororities.

DDDs tend to exist heavily invested in philanthropy and prefer to be labeled "classy" over "fun to party with," although they do not desire to exist considered boring. They have sisterhood seriously and effort non to get caught up in drama, which might atomic number 82 to the sentiment that they're aristocratic and snobbish.

Particularly on a very large campus, undergraduates can benefit from the friendship and support a sorority offers.

Particularly on a very large campus, undergraduates can benefit from the friendship and support a sorority offers.

Zeta Tau Alpha

Zeta Tau Alpha tends to be far more popular in the S than elsewhere in the country. The reputation of Zetas ranges depending on who you talk to, but "political party girls" is a fairly common descriptor; the less charitable have compared Zetas to the bandage of the Jersey Shore. Mayhap considering of this, other Greek organizations accept highly polarized opinions almost Zetas. Many other sororities say they are "hot in a fake way," with heavy employ of makeup and a scrap of a princess complex.

Although Zetas are often committed to philanthropy and successful fundraisers, they accept a reputation for but accepting white girls. This stereotype is, of course, hotly disputed past the Zetas themselves.

The best way to find out whether a sorority is right for you is to participate in recruitment activities and talk with current members.

The all-time way to find out whether a sorority is correct for you is to participate in recruitment activities and talk with current members.

Kappa Kappa Gamma

Kappa Kappa Gamma ("Kappas") are known for being rich girls. Their reputation varies from campus to campus, merely they are universally considered meridian-tier. Maybe considering of the money they bring with them, their houses tend to exist ane of the nicest on campus. However, many consider Kappas materialistic. Members have a reputation for hunting down other trust-fund kids to marry—something that they probably don't have much difficulty doing since they are also considered cute or pretty past most.

You also hear Kappas described as pop and sometimes (just not always) smart and swish. They have a reputation for behaving similar daddy's little princess, but their elevation-tier reputation is intact across the state.

Some sororities are more social than others, hosting parties and events while others are more low-key. Find out for yourself by visiting during recruitment activities.

Alpha Chi Omega

Alpha Chi Omega ("AXO" or "A Chi O") is a mid-tier sorority with a widely varying reputation. AXO girls are generally not considered terribly hot or popular, but they are respected for being classy and involved in campus life. Despite their relatively low profile, AXOs are considered down-to-earth and genuine. They don't tend to exist as social every bit other sororities and tin sometimes seem invisible compared to more than visible sororities.

If you pledge a sorority and then aren't sure it's right for you, make your decision before the initiation process. There is usually a six to eight week period for new pledges to assess whether the sorority is the right fit.

If you pledge a sorority and so aren't sure it'south right for y'all, make your decision earlier the initiation process. There is commonly a six to 8 week menstruum for new pledges to assess whether the sorority is the right fit.

Pi Beta Phi

Pi Beta Phi girls ("Pi Phis") are considered past nigh to be elevation-tier but also have a reputation as fake and superficial. They are non regarded as nice—simply non outright nasty either. Many consider them obsessed with their looks and say they accept a reputation for body paradigm issues. Notwithstanding, this stereotype may be sour grapes on the function of other sororities with inferiority complexes.

With consistently high marks for physical attractiveness, sociability, and popularity, Pi Phis certainly earn the envy of other sororities and the interest of fraternities. What they tend to lack—in philanthropy— doesn't seem to business concern them too much.

Many large sororities have a national culture that is enforced throughout chapters, but since college campuses vary widely, it's important to visit a chapter during recruitment to gauge whether it's right for you.

Many large sororities have a national culture that is enforced throughout capacity, but since higher campuses vary widely, it'south important to visit a chapter during recruitment to gauge whether it's right for you lot.

Kappa Delta

Kappa Delta ("KD") is considered an up-and-coming sorority, one that has risen to the top-tier in terms of reputation in recent decades. This reputation is by no means compatible, which may be due to the diverseness of girls who pledge KD. Unlike another top-tier sororities, Kappa Delta members practise non take a reputation for beingness all clones or princesses, but they tend to exist popular and social. Everyone knows at least one KD they really like and i KD they really hate.

One consistent ascertainment is that KDs are obsessed with popularity. This may exist considering the sorority has recently fought its manner to the top tier and has a reputation to maintain. This may not exist a fair assessment, though, and might simply be the sentiment of those who have seen—and resent—KD'due south rise in rankings.

Choosing a Sorority

  • A full general image is dangerously shut to a stereotype. Take what you hear with a grain of salt and enquiry your specific affiliate. Enquire past and current members, and fifty-fifty people who rushed merely did not join for whatever reason, about their opinion of a sorority.
  • Nourish a recruitment orientation session.
  • Participate in recruitment activities. These are where you'll learn the mission and values of each sorority, and you lot'll option up whether what a sorority says is in line with what is really going on.
  • If you lot pledge to a sorority and so think information technology isn't for y'all, decide on joining before the initiation procedure. There is normally a 6-8 week new member period when y'all can assess whether you lot desire to commit. If you decide that you are not ready before initiation, you can break your pledge from the organization. If you want to participate in recruitment again, you can during the next primary recruitment period.

What You Don't Know Nigh Sororities

KKG on May 26, 2020:

Proud KKG, but all of these sororities are amazing with outstanding members. No need for competition and comparison.

Macy ZTA & Luella ZTA on March 28, 2020:

I am a proud ZTA, I practice not habiliment heavy makeup, I do non act like a princess, this website is very wrong & this author needs to meet Real ZTA and do more enquiry, we are skillful people with empathy and love . To ALL of the sororitys we are great people and DONT let a random website tell u what u are not!!

DZLAM on March 07, 2020:

I'm a DZ and nosotros just received the 2019 Chapter of the Year award from the University of Tennessee Panhellenic Council. A swain DZ is our Panhellenic President now for 2020. Ii DZs are on our school's Junior Panhellenic Council. But co-ordinate to this center anile man, we all just sleep around and party all the time. :) Don't believe everything you lot read people. And don't let some guy on the net define what you're affiliate is. I'k proud of my sorority. PNMs...Don't take advice from a dude who's never even been in a chapter. Considering HE IS A MAN! PAN Love PEOPLE!! Sisterhood is non a competition!!

Sorority Sister on March 06, 2020:

You clearly are very close-minded and ignorant. Each chapter differs from each campus, and plain yous didn't take that into consideration. In fact, you shouldn't even exist "tiering" sororities, considering that shouldn't matter. What should thing is that you cull the sorority that y'all best fit into and makes You lot happy. And if you are a girl reading this who's interested in joining greek life, don't heed to this shit. Not every sorority is going to have the same reputation on every campus, and trust me, reading this crap volition simply brand you miserable during recruitment. Trust the procedure. I did and I am happier than ever in my sorority. Also retrieve that each sorority is special in their own style and just considering you aren't in the same chapter every bit your friend or someone else doesn't mean you can't be friends or be supportive of their chapter. That's what we telephone call panhellenic spirit, which this website clearly lacks!!!!

Jenna Lanston on February 02, 2020:

Pi Beta Phi girls ("Pi Phis") are considered past nearly to be summit-tier but besides have a reputation as imitation and superficial. They are not considered overnice—only non outright nasty either. Many consider them to be obsessed with their looks and say they take a reputation for body image bug. They don't' take talk over the positive (writer's few) compliments about popularity and attractiveness. Can you practise anything nearly this? My mother and daughter are members of Pi Beta Phi. They and their friends are Goose egg like the disbarging comments. Based on the totally appraisal of KKG, It reeks of favoritism and lack of awareness. The Kappa affiliate was shut down for drugs and hazing at Rollins and OSU, and dancing topless at SMU on bid mean solar day? These incidents don't ascertain them either.

TruthSpeaker1 on January 29, 2020:

This is stupid. Every chapter, every year is different. F off with this. Delete it; you lot look stupid.

jules on November 17, 2019:

This is literally the accented dumbest article I've read about sororities since I went to higher in 1987.

Whatever young woman considering joining a sorority- take my advice. Exercise NOT pay any attention to articles like this. Particularly those that try to tell you what an organization of thousands of women across the entire US is similar. Each campus is unlike. Your chapter sisters are the ones you need to mesh with. Not to mention some bitter girls who didn't get in just like to spread misinformation to make themselves feel better.

Then of course I mean - ignore stupid trash like greekrank.com. such websites are not going to give yous any information to work with when selecting (or dropping) a sorority.

And if you think yous demand to be in a sorority to "be somebody" you need therapy. Not a sorority bid.

St Jean Girl on July 20, 2019:

Male child, the knives seem to be out for the Kappas. My experience was that the Kappas, Thetas and Pi Phis were tops. AXO and DG not besides far behind. I'm from the Midwest.

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on Dec xi, 2018:

Having met women from different sororities over my life, I generally take your cess here. Yes, KKG takes the cake. Those young ladies are awesome.

Fortunately, you correctly pointed out these are generalization because from campus to campus in that location are important differences and from region to region.

Sincerely,

Tim

Nice on November 03, 2018:

AOIIs can accept the reputation of existence "srat" girls - sorority girls who hangout with a particular fraternity on campus.

T on August 25, 2018:

I think information technology depends on the schoolhouse/region.

Delta Zeta is probably the hardest to arrive on our campus. They are known as the exclusive ones. Very pretty, very smart, very snobbish.

Nice on July 17, 2018:

Pitiful, I was pretty brutal with Gamma Phi Beta.

I should accept said that they apparel "provocatively". Also, they're extremely confident girls, and they actually practice not care what others think about them. They are leaders.

Nice on July 14, 2018:

What about AGD, AOII and Gamma Phi? It'd be interesting to hear people's perceptions of these sororities. I'll take a become at information technology.

Alpha Gamma Delta - low-to-mid tier (annoying pranksters; dainty merely rude when partying; service oriented) - They seem to accept a adept sisterhood, which seems to be fueled by their need to pull pranks on other frats or steal things from frat houses. Overall, they are dainty girls. However, they practise not desire to be seen as boring, so they try hard to wait like party girls. When they put on this evidence of being social, they tin get unclassy and sloppy. They try to exist the cool girls on campus.

Blastoff Omicron Pi - mid tier (potent sisterhood; unique; non academically aggressive; fun; modest town girls; down to earth) - Being a sorority with the most chapters effectually the U.s. and Canada than any other sorority, their reputations can vary. They tend to accept a strong sisterhood, and they can really develop strong bonds with particular frats. This sorority seems more than concerned nearly recruiting a wide range of girls, which tin can make chapters diverse and interesting, than recruiting the well-nigh "beautiful" girls. Nevertheless, recruiting in this fashion does attract beautiful girls. They're not as concerned with academics or philanthropy than they are nearly socializing/partying and sisterhood. They just want to take fun.

Gamma Phi Beta - mid tier (like to political party; not classy; non service oriented) - If y'all desire a political party and socialize, and so join this sorority. They know how to party, and they'll clothes in the sluttiest attire e'er when doing so. (They tin definitely handle their liquor.) They tin be competitive in Greek life events, which may brand them appear to exist tiptop tier; however, their focus on socializing can touch on their academics and philanthropy initiatives.

Angie on December 29, 2017:

Definitely ChiO and KKG are the superlative tier at well-nigh schools. They tend to be the prettier and wealthier girls. Pi Phi and Tri Delt are usually pretty stiff up at that place likewise. Those were the "big iv" at my school.

Maya Williams on August eleven, 2017:

I detect that college is s nifty place to create lasting friendships, with or without a sorority. The just girls on our campus who were involved in sororities were out of state kids that needed this sense of inclusion to fit in. The rest of us made great friends with other girls in our dorms or in our major. I am happy to say I still have close friends from higher twenty years later, sans a sorority.

Sheryl on April 12, 2017:

Alpha delta pi is missing

Lisa on February 22, 2017:

Pi Beta Phi is known equally Pi Bitchy Phi and is the recognitized,as far and above,'The Elevation' sorority on my huge Greek-led campus. Yes, the Pi Phi National standard of beingness beautiful, rich, blonde, and'hot' is upheld. They can be really snobby to girls on the starting time mean solar day. I mean they must race to the estimator to drop anyone who is a hayseed/dork (Kappa), fat/jockish (Theta), ugly/tacky(Tri Delt) and they were 'nice plenty' to requite me 3 days. I went DG, (slu++y/partners) reputation but undeserved, except for 30-40%.

KD is nothing except in the Due south, same with Zeta, which folded. Lot of truth inthe reputations, except there are a lot of really 18-carat, nice, friendly Pi Phis who are my friends. My roommate, whose dad owns half the state, went Pi Phi. They pick each other out before recruitment even begins. They're smart in that manner. They employ their elevated social status to shut the courtroom doors. Simulated, no, if they don't similar you, YOU know!! DG and Chi O are top of the center tier with Phi Mu, and Kappa at the bottom. Kappa.doesnt have the rich rep, or cute, they kinda hate each other. Half of KKG's pledge class drops out earlier graduating.

Very Helpful. Thanks.

lucy29850 on January 01, 2017:

Sweeping generalizations all around. This is complete nonsense and pure garbage. Every chapter inside a sorority is different. Rather than judging women before you fifty-fifty meet them, why not talk to them and see if information technology is right for you?

yep on Nov 21, 2016:

As a generalization of the whole country, this is pretty accurate!

Beann on September 28, 2016:

The clarification of my Fraternal organization does not fit my experience in the least.

W Declension on September 26, 2016:

I agree that you take to look at each campus to determine the "worth" of a sorority. This commodity was definitely slanted toward Southern and Eastern campuses since the "hottest " sororities in the w (with two exceptions) were non on the list. Time to get with the times and realize that the height houses are no longer in the south and east and beauty and wealth are non considered every bit much as grades, sports and philanthropy. The women of the westward are changing what it means to be function of a stiff group of women who desire to aid change the globe not just change an outfit. Ole Miss, Bama, LSU who cares!

Bitsy on August 19, 2016:

Most of the girls who were debutantes with me were Pi Phis. I'm a Chi Omega from Ole Miss. The Pi Phis were from iv dissimilar schools, and they were all the most beautiful grouping of girls, classy, richer than the one Kappa, and fun. OK, honestly, they were all beautiful blondes, dandy bodies, looked alike, and were a tad snobby, but not mean or false. If they didn't like you,you knew it. My younger sister pledged Pi Phi at Kansas, and over again, by and large blonde, debutantes, and extremely selective. Chi O id summit tier there as well. Kappa is mid- tier and Theta is very practiced. I'd say Chi O is more than top tier and Pi Phi is universal top tier. Kappa is slipping after existence kicked out of Rollins,

UConn, and Ohio State. They are known for hazing and weak sisterhood. But saying what is the truth at present. I've met s lot of heavy, mean, unattractive kappas and KDs. Article seems slanted.

Jason Menayan (author) from San Francisco on July 05, 2016:

The title says information technology all: these are stereotypes. An individual's personal experiences might corroborate one or more of these, or they might stand in direct contradiction of them. :)

PanhellenicPresident on July 03, 2016:

I can non believe that this is something that exists. I hope that whoever wrote this or may read this tin can run into across stereotypes. To stereotype any system and the members a part of these organizations is analytical of what these organization were founded on. I'd hope that by now people would be able to run across how each organization is full of unique and diverse members who find shared values in their organization. NO ONE has the right to effort to determine which is "better" than the other. Each group is made for members who share values and are willing to grow through their ritual. All these Panhellenic chapters have something to benefit their members and shouldn't exist labeled past i person's opinion based off of numbers and observations.

Jason Menayan (author) from San Francisco on April xviii, 2016:

Do you know what a "reputation" is?

Disappointed on April 01, 2016:

This article is extremely offensive. With national capacity having hundreds of thousands of members you can't possibly categorize all of them into a few nasty words.

Like my mom e'er said, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say information technology at all.

Steph on October 04, 2015:

I am at a TX college and peak tier is Kappa, Theta and Pi Phi. Chi-O and Tri Delt are mid. Kappa is rich and beautiful. Theta smart and cute. Pi Phi is cheer or dance types.

Elle on September 20, 2015:

What about Blastoff Sigma Tau? Information technology's interesting because they seem to have virtually no current rep at all

Proud ZTA on September 20, 2015:

This is the most ignorant post I've ever read. Each sorority'due south traits vary by campus. But leave it to a narrow minded individual like yourself to generalize thousands of women based on most likely your ain observation of one school. I'm a Zeta Tau Alpha and I don't wear heavy make up nor exercise I have a "princess circuitous." We have the highest chapter GPA on our campus and we're beyond passionate about our philanthropy. This is why sorority stereotypes exist. So if y'all're reading this article, please exercise more than enquiry than this fool did. Go to whatever campus yous, your daughter, etc. plan on rushing and Meet THE GIRLS. Larn their philanthropy, their academic achievements, their sisterhood. Look by the brand upward/money/chapter stereotype. No matter what sorority information technology is y'all'll observe beautiful women inside and out that want to achieve corking things.

Tami Rogers from Seattle, Washington on February 09, 2015:

Both of my daughters are DG's at the Academy of Washington. They are incredibly happy there and I was shocked frankly that they rushed to begin with. Neither one is the "sorority type". What I have learned is that we all take our pre-conceived notions most what sororities are and virtually of it is crap. They take establish a place to practise philanthropy, acquire incredible report habits and make life-long friends. I also know they political party--merely that is not their focus (particularly later freshman twelvemonth!) I take always been anti-sorority and wouldn't have been caught dead joining ane myself--but I take changed my mind. Interesting Hub conversation @livelonger. Cheers!

Caitlin on January 12, 2015:

I'd like to see all the sororities here.

I thing I have noticed recently at a lot of campuses, is that kappa kappa gamma getting a reputation of being druggies,

That thing that has changed the most is the KappaKappa Gammas are known for hazing. Charters suspended at CSU, Depauw and being kicked off the University of Connecticut and a bus load urinating in public park at Washington state. I hear of strife in the sisterhood between the goody two shoes and wild partiers particularly with cocaine.

Now their National name is Kappa Kappa Gramma. Well, they will take bail $.

You seem very accurate in your full general portrayals of the different sororities. By and large everywhere I see pictures of Pi Phi's (summit tier) and Tri Delts as having the most consistently beautiful members of the sororities.

If KD is a top-tier and that is the South only. Chi O is probably the nearly well-known sorority, particularly in the S, and is a peak-tier at many of those schools, not nationally.

AXOs are prissy and friendly, which tin make them somewhat classy.

What about Theta?

I would say pretty girls but many chunky and athletic. Generally rich, classy, snobby, and brunettes Who are equestrians. I've heard a lot about PKT, Pi Phi ,Kappa, Theta, because they all go afterwards rich girls

Melissa Clason from Fayetteville, NC on October 17, 2014:

At my school, the universal fact is that

Pi Phi gets the 'Best' girls, (i.e. Beautiul, rich, smart and even many nice ones).

So it's betwixt Tri-Delt, Theta, and DG.

At the bottom tier is kappa kappa gamma, delta zeta, AZD, and kappa delta.

It's and then weird to see girls get then upset over getting dropped by the good sororities and having to go to the lowest tier parties.

They really drib out of recruitment than pledge a bottom tier sorority, like kappa Kappa Gamma or DZ.

Travis Wakeman on May 19, 2014:

Isn't a lot of this subject to what school you are at? Surely different schools volition have different stereotypes for what each sorority is like based on the local population.

Lori on March 17, 2014:

I agree that at my schoolhouse Pi Beta Phi is the Top of the Top Tier, only they are nice, friendly and beautiful.

Kappa Kappa Gamma is the definitely at the bottom of the middle tier or top of the bottom tier.

Most the Kappas all being rich, I would disagree. They may similar to act that way for reputation sake, merely I know at least 10 who are on loans, student aid, etc.

The Kappas aren't rich similar the Pi Phis and Thetas.

I don't go why the Thetas aren't on this list. They are considered top tier at many schools. It was one of the offset sororities founded.

The rest of the 'general' descriptions are amazingly accurate.

Sarah on December xxx, 2013:

This is admittedly absurd. Pi Beta Phi at Arkansas is the COMPLETE Opposite of what is posted on here. These girls are amazingly talented and unique and express their own individualism while having most of the campus like them. Non ane person do I hear that they detest pi Phis. Not one!!! Most down to earth girls I've ever met. Not to mention the hipster/edgy type. Every bit for Chi O, yep they were founded hither, but they are the rudest girls. Majority of the school hates them. Kappa kappa gamma is the richest out of all of them.

Very, very interesting stuff!!! I tin can agree it has to be an objective sort

is doing their best to impress. So, that becomes the best time to assess

what kind of people you desire to accept equally mentors and long-life friends,

partly by reputation, but mostly by YOUR OWN GUT FEELINGS! I

Even with some of the negative comments (which are expected and should exist from every house), I accept to say that this is pretty spot on for Texas schools, Bama, and Ole miss (theta exception for rebels). Chi o- "bible beaters"- love The Lord, academics is of import, Pi Phis (top)- dear their Lilly and pearls with a dash of vodka, while Kappas (tiptop) but love their vodka (and are normally the more 'brunette' house with rich girls), alpha phi - idgaf girls, very popular among the frats, like shooting fish in a barrel DZ..nuff said, tri-delts (tri hards) usually pretty top - your camp counselor kinda gals, zetas (top) the on campus barbies, theta---jocks - so on with that. Again all the "rude" terms that I just associated with each house to not describe the individuals of a house, but terms similar these come virtually when sure houses deed together in poor ways. Greek life is a fantastic experience where so many memories and bonds are fabricated and stereotypes should non be considered during recruitment. Every house has it's pros and cons, but I just accept to say that I really concur with the (lamentable to say it) stereotypes mentioned in this commodity!

Rachel on December 08, 2013:

This was really interesting to read. So I'1000 a DZ and actually nearly of us are pretty bonny (believe it or not). At my school the height iii sororities are Delta Zeta, Tri Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Alpha. It'southward unlike at all schools, but at my school were known as beingness the funnest sorority to political party with and we have the best sisterhood.

Krystal on Nov 11, 2013:

Chi-Os and Kappa Alpha Thetas are top tier sororities at our school.

Chi-Os are known for academics and being the skilful girls. Dainty girls with a stiff sisterhood.

Thetas are known as the pretty girls who are 'sassy withal classy'. At our school they are mostly blonde cutesy girls, but they are big in to their philanthropy.

Kappas are the rich girls some are cute only some are not, they basically let girls in who have fiscal ways.

AEPhis are known to brume. They have heavier girls in their sorority and would completely humiliate their pledges past making them strip down in front of their brother frat to circle 'prob' areas in a sharpie.

Pi phis were partiers.

SDTs were the athletic ones, but known to be easy..std sdt.

Katherine on September 03, 2013:

I discover this to be interestingly authentic for major generalizations most sororities. Pi Beta Phi, and Kappa Kappa Gamma are generally considered top tier across the state, with some exceptions. Kappa Delta is not similar Kappa Alpha Theta, which was omitted, and also considered superlative tier. I retrieve Delta Delta Delta is right on. I hold with a Samantha, that the writer seems to be harshest on Pi Beta Phi and fawns over the Kappas. I'm non a member of either, simply I read it and idea "Wow, somebody doesn't like the Pi Phis". They do have a reputation, similar Kappa, of being bossy, simply Kappa seems to care more than about their 'image' than Theta or Pi Phi. Chi O, Delta Zeta, Blastoff Phi, and Blastoff Chi Omega were pretty accurate according to the dissimilar campuses I have visited. I would dearest to meet all the sororities listed and updated. :) Theta honey,

Audrey Selig from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 24, 2013:

My sorority is not on this list, but I am aware of Pi Phi, KD, Chi Omega. and Kappa Kappa Gamma. It is probably true that it depends on the affiliate, but near of your impressions are pretty accurate. from what I know of them. Friendships in sorority last a lifetime. When you live with someone and piece of work and then closely with that person and others, the friendships become important. In fact, today, someone I know is driving out of boondocks to visit a sorority sis from twenty three years ago. Thanks for sharing.

In Greek Life on March 25, 2013:

Livelonger....

You are clueless. Until y'all travel to every college and every chapter you really have no right to pass judgement on whatever woman in any chapter. I was blessed for 2 years to travel around the country and spend time with sorority girls in 30 states and numerous chapters. Depending on the campus the girls can change just 1 matter holds true. Sorority girls are empowered woman driven to make a difference, donate time and better themselves. Looks tin come up and go, boyfriends alter but sisterhood is a lifetime. How dare you pass judgement or share your lame impressions. I strongly disagree with 20 of your descriptions. I would venture to say your fraternity life was short and y'all are disparately trying to relive your college life. Shame on you.

Alex on May 29, 2012:

I only gotta say, for the people criticizing livelonger, don't. No one is saying that these reputations are absolute for every chapter in every university. Plain it varies from university to university and chapter to affiliate. Livelonger is only compiling a list of "commonly-held opinions." OPINIONS, people. I really think Livelonger did a good job of presenting each sorority with both positive and negative points. Take Pi Phi, for instance... it says they take a reputation for being a fake (and reputation does non equal reality), merely check out this quote: "Many consider them to exist obsessed with their looks, and have body image issues. But these might very well be the gripes of sororities with an inferiority complex?" Livelonger is giving the Pi Phi'due south a style out, maybe they aren't really self-absorbed, and other people are just beingness a piddling picayune and jealous.

Samantha on May 18, 2012:

Pi Beta Phi isn't ever like that, I know someone who is very prissy and outgoing who is in Pi Beta Phi . Its obvious that the woman who wrote this didn't similar this group because she (or he) mentioned about a hundred times how "Fake" or "Plastic" , etc. . they are. Everyone is different. Don't gauge! :(

Tancy on May 16, 2012:

Pi Phi is the cute, richest sorority on elevation at my HUGE frat/sor oriented school and kappa and Chi o are the bottom. Interesting how it all works.

Allie on May 14, 2012:

This is pretty accurate, merely I become to a southern school where Chi O and Kappa are at the very acme. Both take very attractive and fun girls.

JD on May 09, 2012:

How incredibly brusk-sighted. Yous can't classify Whatever sorority with a "general reputation".....each chapter at each academy is different. Have to concord with Lindsey right above me. Girls going through rush (and those rushing them) will decide where they fit in the best; the recruitment process is designed to try to ensure that good matches are made, and each PNM ultimately joins the business firm in which she will feel nigh comfortable. It doesn't work all the fourth dimension, but it works enough of the time that sororities have maintained their popularity among undergrads for more than 120 years. Furthermore, if yous're going to generalize like this, then include all panhellenic sororities, not merely the largest national groups. Signed...proud fellow member of DDD

Lindsey on May 07, 2012:

I think it is slightly ridiculous that people make pages like this. Apparently every girl going through rush wants to go into the "best" sorority on their campus and wants to be role of the "peak tier." Anyone and anybody always involved in the Greek System is obviously going to be biased toward their sorority or the sorority that all of their friends are in. The reputation of each sorority is DIFFERENT at every sorority you go to. Let the poor girls blitz for Christ's sake and stop trying to put ideas into their heads near which are the best, the worst, the richest, the sluttiest, and the craziest sororities. Every girl should have the opportunity to become a experience for each and every firm she rushes and decide for herself which she would fit in the best at.

hahaha on April 29, 2012:

This is literally obnoxious. Every sorority has different traits from chapter to chapter. To attempt to generalize thousands and thousands of women based on a national chapter is humorous to me. And every bit for the parents and others commenting on this and taking it seriously, don't. Each chapter varies and although SOME of these stereotypes are similar to those on my campus, some are so far from it. Learn for yourself.

SororityAlum on April 22, 2012:

Agreed that dissimilar universities hold sororities in different esteem!! Phi Mu is very pop at LSU, merely NOT at Arkansas and they even lost their chapter at UA bc they couldn't maintain their numbers. They were students calling Phi Mu girls Phi Moo at Arkansas and and so the girls at LSU are pretty girls and it's a popular sorority. It all depends on the school you go to. Just like Lambda Chis for guys.

Taylor on Apr 15, 2012:

A lot of these are inaccurate. Delta Zetas are gorgeous, like shooting fish in a barrel girls while Delta Gammas are typically bigger in size and far more unattractive. They aren't called "Del Grandes" for nothin'.

Alpha Phi on April 10, 2012:

is usually a top tier sorority and the girls in it are wonderful.. Every sorority has partiers, and so zero should make aphi stand out in that expanse. Beautiful, classy, intelligent girls are in APHI! AOE

louromano on March 22, 2012:

Great hub .Thank you for sharing.

DGgirl on March xv, 2012:

I agree with most of what yous said (particularly about Delta Gamma) even so, I'yard pretty certain Chi Omega is considered peak tier at about major universities...

veronicahidalgo on February 12, 2012:

I'm then glad that i read all the comments earlier leaving this folio. Information technology looks like my girl is going to be joining Alpha Phi and i've been and so disappointed solely because of their reputation, but she loves all the girls that she'south met so far and it seems to exist a good fit for her, just the reputation........ ugh. Not good from everything i'm reading and I don't know how accurate it is. REAL feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Amanda on February 02, 2012:

I detect that Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Kappa Kappa Gamma, all are considered "height tier' nationally. ALL have very rich girls and imitation girls. The Pi Phis practise tend to get the 'beauties', the Thetas get the 'jocks' and the Kappas get the 'partiers'. This tin can switch from school to school, but you did get the reps right, except for KD. I take never seen them as height tier at any school I have observed. Pi Phis tend to be big-headed, and really don't care what people think of them, they seem to be to a higher place it all. Kappa Kappa Gamma seems to be falling in their ranking some due to their wild, "substance' use, and 'like shooting fish in a barrel' dating habits. I recollect you lot are correct on about all of them to a large degree.

Shannon on January 16, 2012:

At my school, Chi O and KD are considered the "best" sororities and what you said well-nigh the Chi O'due south is illustrated exactly at my school. And the KD'south are definitely a hodge podge, but I beloved em! I'thousand rushing KD in the fall. The KD girls at my school aren't afraid of being a picayune odd and that'southward what makes them and then approachable. Also, I know several Kappa Kappa Gamma's from other schools, and boy are yous right almost them!

Elizabeth on January 11, 2012:

You have got to be kidding. this is then out of date it'due south pathetic. I nourish i of the top universities in the country, and arguably the most competitive sorority school in the state. One of the "height" sororities in this write-upward just had to close down their chapter, and one of the "mid-tier" sororities has and so many peak women that it'south most embarrassing to the other sororities on campus. Any you read here should probably exist ignored. Seriously.

Kenzie on January 01, 2012:

Well I'd just similar to start off by proverb, it is never too late to bring together a sorority! This twelvemonth, we invited a few juniors to join our business firm! Sure, being a freshman gives you lot a improve chance because you will be a 4-twelvemonth member, only at the same time, sometimes the older girls that bring together halfway through college end upwardly beingness stronger members for the short time they are at that place, and it also sets you lot apart from all the freshmen who are rushing because you are dissimilar! Being in a sorority is something I can't explain in words. And then simply maxim "sororities aren't my thing" or "I'one thousand not a sorority girl" is dumb to me. Because honestly, sororities aren't like what you lot run across in the movies. It's just a great place to encounter friends that you will have for the rest of your life. The friendships in sororities are unlike annihilation else and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Nationally, every sorority has a philanthropy, and so every single sorority does clemency work. Information technology's non just a few. So if the charity work is what you are worried about, do some research on what the specific philanthropies of the chapters at your schoolhouse are. For example, nationally ChiO is "Make-A-Wish" and DG is "Service for Sight." Find something y'all're interested in, but most chiefly, just go a experience for where you vest. I was pressured to go 1 way considering I had friends who were already members of a certain house but I ended upward joining a different i and I've never been happier. Information technology was where I felt I fit in, and I ended up finding out that I would accept been extremely unhappy if I'd gone with my sometime friends.

Even if y'all don't think sororities are for you, I would suggest just giving it a shot. Yous have cypher to loose, and you'll never know if you could absolutely dearest it until you endeavour it!!

Alex on July 13, 2011:

I go to UF, and the sorority girls are ridiculous. Tri-Delts take their own proverb, "Tri-Delt, everyone else has." They are kind notorious for being, um, generous. Both my mom and grandmom were Kappa Deltas, and they wanted me to join then badly. It's definitely not for me though. My friend got asked how much her dress cost when she was pledging. Non a scene I would ever want to exist involved in.

Garrett Mickley from Jupiter, Florida on July 13, 2011:

That'south very interesting. I never knew anything nearly this stuff, and your take on their reputations was a lot more interesting than reading a wikipedia of their history.

Jason Menayan (author) from San Francisco on June 27, 2011:

I can completely understand. I was exposed to a bunch of them my sophomore year in college, and learned a fleck through "osmosis" although I tin completely understand non wanting to pledge!

Simone Haruko Smith from San Francisco on June 27, 2011:

What a cool overview, livelonger! Now I feel like a dolt for not fifty-fifty pledging any... I signed up to when I was a freshman, and then saw all the girls and was like "...... notforme."

Merely some of these audio really fun! Ah well.

Perhaps your guide will give others a better initial overview and then THEY, different me, will still consider pledging some of these sororities :D

Jason Menayan (author) from San Francisco on June 23, 2011:

Yes, they are pop on certain college campuses, not as popular or fifty-fifty nonexistent on others. I never felt compelled to join myself, but you are right, those that benefit charity work should exist admired. :)

Carolee Samuda from Jamaica on June 23, 2011:

Hey Livelonger,

Wow, all I knew virtually sororities before was from movies. This is very interesting stuff. We don't accept much of that her in or country, but from what I have gathered it'southward not so bad if you find the right one to be a function of. From the little I do know some sororities exercise charities and that is adept in my volume.

Thank you for the info.

Have a wonderful evening.
